A Codicil is a document that amends an existing Will. Amendments made by a Codicil may vary from minor changes to major amendments to a Will such as changing the beneficiaries of dispositions of properties under the Will. The legal requirements of Codicil are the same as the original Will for signature of the testator and two or three independent witnesses depending on the state or jurisdiction.
In some states or jurisdictions if a beneficiary under the original Will is a witness to the execution of the Codicil to the same, it may lead to nullify any disposition of property under the original Will in his favor.
As an alternative to a Codicil a testator may execute a new Will by revoking any earlier Will or Codicil.
