Premises liability is concerned with the degree of care that a landlord owes to an inmate or visitor on his property or land.
In some states the law requires the property owner to keep the property in a state of reasonable maintenance and repairs to render it safe.
In other states whether a victim of an accident in a premise is entitled to compensation depends on his status within the land.
The landowner or possessor is obliged to take reasonable care to ensure the safety of the visitor or inmate. At least they must be cautioned regarding the dangers in the property in question. However, there is no such duty of care for safety of any entrant without permission or towards a trespasser, unless such visitor is a child.
