In exercise of the powers conferred upon him under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 the Secretary of State has made the Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice) (Interception of Communications) Regulations 2000 (http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2000/20002699.htm) and it came into force on 24th October 2000. Certain interceptions of telecommunication communications are authorized by these Regulations which are otherwise prohibited under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. It has been laid down that the interception has to be by or with the consent of a person carrying on a business (which includes the activities of government departments, public authorities and others exercising statutory functions) for purposes relevant to that person's business and using that business's own telecommunication system. The Telecommunications (Data Protection and Privacy) Regulations 1999 (http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1999/19992093.htm) implement the Directive 97/66/EC of the European Parliament and the Council concerning the processing of personal data and privacy in the telecommunications sector and revoke the Telecommunications (Data Protection and Privacy) (Direct Marketing) Regulations 1998 which have already implemented part of the Directive. The guidelines of E-Commerce Regulations 2002 (The Electronic Commerce (EC DIRECTIVE) Regulations 2002) describe the requirements which apply in the United Kingdom for the assessment and appointment of the Notified Bodies required by the Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) Directive. The Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal
Equipment Regulations 2000 implemented Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity. The Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (Amendment) Regulations 2003 has amended the Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Regulations 2000.
