ITU is the principle agency of the United Nations for information and communication technologies. ITU has three core sectors, namely, radiocommunication, standardization and development. ITU organizes TELECOM events and was the lead organizing agency of the World Summit on the Information Society. ITU membership includes 191 Member States and more than 700 Sector Members and Associates. ITU has been playing a significant role in organizing the nations and private sector enterprises to facilitate communication throughout the world.
India is a member of the International Telecommunication Union. To support the ITU initiatives, the ITU- APT Foundation of India has been established. This foundation governs the activities concerning research and study on telecommunications including broadcasting, information technology and space sciences, with special emphasis on rural development. There are six corporate members of the ITU- APT Foundation of India. The main purpose of the foundation is to support ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, APT General Assembly and other major ITU and APT meetings and events. ITU Member States and Sector Members have access to a number of services including the Telecommunication Information Exchange Service (TIES) and Who's Who - the ITU Global Directory.
