The Drug Enforcement Administration is responsible for enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act in the USA. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the USA assigns a unique identifier number, called DEA number, to any health care provider authorized to write prescriptions for controlled substances. This number is used to monitor and track down the movement of controlled substances.
The registrants with DEA number must maintain stock inventory of controlled substances and are liable or responsible for any shortage or stock deficiency.
