Mining Industry Advisory Committees

The Mining Industry Committee, the Safety and Health in Mines Research Advisory Board, the Escape and Rescue Operations in Mines Working Group and Mining Qualifications Board are the Mining Industry Advisory Committees in the UK.

Mining Industry Committee was formerly known as the Deep Mined Coal Industry Advisory Committee. The Mining Industry Committee provides a forum for the Mining Industry to maintain and improve major hazard controls and standards of health and safety. The Safety and Health in Mines Research Advisory Board was set up to advice on current and future research needs for the protection of people at work and others from hazards to their health and safety and to provide information, advice and guidance on research matters relevant to improving standards of health and safety within the deep mined coal industry.

The Escape and Rescue Operations in Mines Working Group advises on matters concerning the organisation and conduct of mines rescue and recovery work and fire fighting, and also on the design, testing and improvement of apparatus for those purposes. The task of the Mining Qualifications Board is to advise the Health and Safety Executive on the setting of standards for the approval of qualifications under the provisions of the Management and Administration of Safety and Health at Mines Regulations 1993. Only the standards that relate to qualifications for use at mines of coal, shale and fireclay are considered by the Board. The Board holds an annual legislation examination for certain categories of qualification and a practical examination for mine surveyors which include setting the syllabus and appointing examiners and moderators.
