The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997 has been enacted with an objective to provide for the establishment of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal for the purpose of regulating the Tele-communication services, adjudicate disputes, dispose of appeals and to protect the interests of service providers and consumers of the telecom sector, to promote and ensure orderly growth of the telecom sector, and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India shall be a body corporate having perpetual succession. Subject to the provisions of this act, TRAI shall have the power to acquire, hold and dispose of property, both movable and immovable, and to contract, and shall, by the said name, sue or be sued.
