The Official Secrets Act, 1923 has been enacted to consolidate and amend the law relating to official secrets in India. The Indian Official Secrets Act, 1889 was the first law relating to official secrets. It was amended by the Indian Official Secrets (Amendment) Act, 1904 and later, the Official Secrets Act, 1911, a British Act was brought into force in India. Subsequently, it was felt desirable that there should be a single consolidated Act applicable to Indian conditions. Thus, the Official Secrets Act, 1923 was passed. The Act bars all the government servants from passing on the information to any other person.
