The technical and functional sides of the products and processes are protected under the patents. New inventions, how things work, what they do, how they do it, what they are made of and how they are made are protected by patent. By patents, the owner can prevent others from manufacturing, using, importing or selling the invention without the prior permission of the inventor. In order to get patents, the invention must:
Be new
Have an inventive step that is not obvious to someone with knowledge and experience in the subject
Can be made or used in an industry
Must not be:
A scientific or mathematical discovery, theory of method
A medical treatment or diagnosis
Against public policy or morality
An animal or a plant
A work of literature, art, music and drama
An mental cat, playing a game or doing business
Computer programming or representation of information
If the above-referred conditions are fulfilled, then an application for patents can be made for an invention. A patent, if already obtained, has to be renewed every year. After the 5th year, a patent can be renewed for a period up to 20 years.
