The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis was established according to the provisions of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Act, 1993 to promote and safeguard the interests and rights of Safai Karamcharis. At the outset, the Commission was constituted in 1994 for a period of 3 years. The term of the Commission was extended from time to time. The tenure of the present Commission has been extended with effect from January 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009 with the approval of the Union Cabinet. The continuation of the existing 32 posts in the Secretariat of the Commission has also been approved during the same period intending to facilitate the socio-economic development of Safai Karamcharis. The National Commission has been empowered to investigate specific grievances as well as matters relating to implementation of programmes and scheme for welfare of Safai Karamcharis. The Government is required to consult the Commission on all major policy matters affecting Safai Karamcharis. The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis seeks to study, evaluate and monitor the implementation of various schemes for Safai Karamcharis as an autonomous organisation and also to provide redressel of their grievances.
