Waste Minimization under Integrated Pollution Control
In the perspective of Integrated Pollution Control, according to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Pollution, ‘waste’ is any loss or discharge of any material from the concerned process, particularly the release of potentially polluting substances into the three environmental media of air, land and water.
In the Chief Inspector’s Guidance Note on the Chemical Industry, applicants for process have been advised to put in place a Waste Minimization Program in advance of submitting their application for process authorization. The areas with scope for reduction in releases have to be identified, thereby providing the foundation of a program for upgrading the plant.
Such programs of waste minimization have environmental and economic benefits.
