Domestic, industrial and commercial solid wastes in the United Kingdom are disposed of on engineering landfill sites. Waste management also covers recovery, reuse and recycling of materials that would have otherwise entered the waste stream.
Under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act of 1990 any body dealing with waste at any point from its generation to disposal, must take care to ensure that the waste remains within the legal waste disposal stream, right from its delivery to transporters to its final resting place.
These provisions are supported by a statutory code of practice, which enjoin a degree of care on all those dealing with waste. Any one to whom they deliver waste are also obliged to take the same degree of care. Violation is an offence that can lead to institution of criminal proceedings against the delinquent.
Another area of concern is the proper closure of waste disposal sites without posing any risk environmental hazard.
