Related Laws on Prevention and Control of Water Pollution
The Indian Fisheries Act, 1897 lays down two kinds of penal offences, namely, destruction of fish by explosives in inland waters and on coasts and destruction of fish by poisoning of waters, whereby the government can sue any person who commit such offences. The Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 makes provisions for prevention of pollution of the sea by oil and aims to deal with waste arising from ships along the coastal areas within a specified radius. In exercise of the powers conferred under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 the Central Government has formulated the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Rules, 1975 and the Central Board for the Prevention and Control of Pollution (Procedure for Transaction of Business) Rules, 1975 to implement its provisions. In exercises of the powers conferred by the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, the Central government has issued a notification specifying the Delhi Zonal Laboratory at Chandrawal Water Works-II, Sham Nath Marg, Delhi of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nehru Marg, Nagpur-440020 as a Central Water Laboratory to carry out the functions entrusted to the Central Water laboratory under the said Act. The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Cess (Amendment) Act, 2003 has amended the definition of ‘industry’ to include any operation or process, or treatment and disposal system, which consumes water or gives rise to sewage effluent or trade effluent, but does not include any hydel power unit. class="innerlink">http://envfor.nic.in/legis/env/env1.html
