The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 was enacted for the protection of Wild animals, birds and plants and for other connected ancillary or incidental matters. The Act provides for Constitution of the Wildlife Advisory Board and appointment of Director of Wildlife Preservation Assistant and Directors of Wildlife Preservation. In exercise of powers conferred by the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the Central Government has laid the Wild Life (Protection) Rules, 1995 and the Wildlife (Specified Plant Stock Declaration) Central Rules, 1995. The amendment of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, in 1991, has facilitated the enforcement of mandatory standards and norms for management of zoos through the Central Zoo Authority. The National Zoo Policy, 1998 aims to complement and strengthen the national efforts in conservation and strengthen the national efforts in conservation of the rich biodiversity of the country, particularly the fauna and to give proper direction and thrust to the management of zoos through co-operation and participation of all concerned. To implement the provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, the Central Government has formulated the National Board for Wild Life Rules, 2003.
