The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 was legislated to provide for the prevention of infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals and for that purpose to amend the law relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals. The Act provides for the establishment of Animal Welfare Board of India by the Central Government for the promotion of animal welfare. The Act imposes duty on every person having the care or charge of any animal to take all reasonable measures to ensure the well-being of such animal and to prevent the infliction upon such animal of unnecessary pain or suffering. For the offence of inflicting cruelty upon animals, punishment consisting of fine and imprisonment is imposed according to the gravity of the offence.
