Offences against Property

Chapter XVII of the Indian Penal Code lays down the provisions relating to offences against property. The Code has described these offences under ten sub-heads in view of the wide scope of illegal deprivation of property which includes: (a) Theft (b) Extortion (c) Robbery and Dacoity (d) Criminal Misappropriation (e) Criminal Breach of Trust (f) Receiving Stolen Property (g) Cheating (h) Fraudulent Deed (i) Mischief and (j) Criminal Trespass. Dishonesty is the basic constituent which is common to all these offences but the manner in which dishonesty is exercised differs in each case. The Code defines Dishonesty as the ‘intention of causing wrongful gain to one person or wrongful loss to another’
