Consumer Redressal under Other Laws |
| To enforce the intent of the legislation, the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 does not undermine other laws which provide redressal to aggreived consumers. There are provisions of redressal under the Arbitration Act, 1996, the Contract Act, 1872, Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, the Sales of Goods Act, 1930, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, Indian Penal Code, 1860, Competition Act, 2002, Right to Information Act, 2005, Essential Commodities Act, 1955, Carriers Act, 1865, Specific Relief Act, 1963, Railway Claims Tribunal Act, 1987, Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Debt Recovery Tribunal etc. The enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 provides additional remedies. In case of any clash between jurisdictions, the jurisdiction of the Consumer Protection Act stands as the consumer friendly jurisdiction.
