Preamble to the US Constitution

A preamble is an introductory declaration or opening description of the principles of the text and the philosophy behind it. It is a statement of purpose.

The Preamble to the US Constitution reads as follows:-

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquillity, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America”

The Constitution was written in 1787 by several committees, the most important of them being the “Committee of Stile and Arrangement". This Committee was entrusted with compiling all of the articles and clauses to be incorporated in the Constitution and putting them into a logical order. On September 1787, the Committee presented the final draft. The members of the Committee were Alexander Hamilton, William Johnson, James Madison, Rufus King and Gouverneur Morris.
