There are 646 constituencies in United Kingdom. Every single eligible person can cast his vote in favour of the candidate in his constituency. The candidate who gets the maximum number of votes from a constituency becomes the MP from that constituency.
The General Elections
At the General Elections, candidates are chosen for the post of MPs from the available and eligible nominees. General Elections are normally held every 4 to 5 years. In case of the death of a MP or his retirement, an election is held in that particular constituency in order to find a new MP for that constituency.
Political parties
There are three major political Parties in UK – The Labour Party, The Conservative and the Liberal Democrats. There are some MPs from smaller political parties and some are independent candidates.
Devolved Parliaments and Assemblies in UK. The party’s nomination officer must authorize the candidature of the candidate for the MP elections.
The Parliament of UK has MPs from areas all across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Apart from these representations, there is a Parliament in Scotland, a National Assembly in Wales and a National Assembly in Northern Ireland, which is, at present suspended. However, separate elections are held for election of MPs for these devolved political bodies. Candidates who win these elections, donot become MPs of the UK parliament but they are granted powers on a regional basis
